The GTO was the first American muscle car package. This option for the Pontiac LeMans put a big-block V-8 in a mid-size body and added a blacked-out grille appearance, hood scoops, bucket seats, special name badges, and fat red-stripe tires. Crisply tailored and sized just right, the GTO coupe, hardtop and convertible generated combined sales of 32,450 cars, nearly seven times as many as expected. An ability to go from 0-to-60 in only seven seconds attracted young buyers. The convertible was the rarest model and only 6,644 were built. A handful had the 348 hp Tri-Power engine.
